Properly Dressed Children in Books

Will Scott, The Cherrys' Famous Case

Miss Verity has been re-arranging the bookcase that has all--well, most--of her children's book collection in it, and of course this involves much sitting on the floor and re-reading. She's been taking an especial pleasure in the illustrations, this time around, and has decided to inflict a few on other people.

It's not that any of this is immediately helpful to adults in search of wardrobing inspiration, but there is something marvellously reassuring about these young people. They inhabit a fictional world with more charm and appeal than most, and you just know these children could not possibly have grown up to be the kind of people to commit sartorical crimes.

Meet the Cherrys--well, some of them; the Bigs, as the adults are called, don't show up in the illustrations all that often, and we'll get to the girls in a later post. Seated on this bench are Roy Cherry, Joe Pringle, and Jimmy Cherry.
Here they are again. Joe seems to have something horribly wrong with his posture, which all the other characters are too polite to mention.

And here they are, properly pyjama'd. Miss Verity does love seeing people in pyjamas. It allows for such delicately balanced social situations as "sharing a bedroom with a friend without creating any confusion that you are about to spring the sight of your naked self on them unannounced." At the very least, a pyjama'd roommate has to unbutton, which gives one time to express disinterest or to flee the scene. (Miss Verity is, of course, joking, but nevertheless she is profoundly thankful for illustrations which quietly indicate the Cherry children and their friends have something, anything, on their minds besides their burgeoning sexuality.)

One last picture of Roy, because he was always the brains of the outfit, and Miss Verity had a crush on him for that exact reason.
